Mayer Materials started in 2006 as a sand pit in Azle, Texas. Today we hand-craft living soils from recycled coffee at a single facility. Here is how we got here.
Meet the Mayers
The Mad Scientist and a good idea.
Mayer Materials is David and Heather Mayer. David is the one a friend nicknamed the Mad Scientist, for his obsession with the microbes and minerals that make soil come alive. Heather is the reason the coffee compost found its way to houseplants.
Together they hand-craft every Mayer product, right here at the Azle facility.
Our story
How coffee became our foundation.
It started with a sand pit
Mayer Materials opened in 2006 as a sand pit. In 2016 the company turned to composting, and David fell deep into soil science. A friend in the business started calling him the Mad Scientist, for how much he loved the microbes and elements in the soil that feed a plant.
One of the company's first recycling customers was a local coffee and tea supplier, and coffee has been an input in the compost ever since.
Small, special, and unique
We make it the way we believe in it.
We believe in being small, special, and unique as a company, too. Every product we make is hand-crafted by our team and produced only at our facility. Together we have repurposed tens of millions of pounds of spent coffee grounds into living soil, and we are still counting.
